Os Brasas da Marambaia - Carimbo So No Para (N/D)

Gravasom GVLP 3003

As I write this text, our friend Pedro is busy helping his friend with his PhD thesis on regional music from the north of Brazil and is ripping corresponding albums from his colossal collection of music for him.

He offered to send all these albums to us, so that I can evaluate them and post those that are suitable for this particular side branch of infinite parallel realities that I am focusing upon.

Needless to say that I accepted this great opportunity to encounter music that otherwise I would probably never have the chance to hear and which is quite unknown to people outside (and inside?) of Brazil.

But, I won't evaluate but will post all that he sends (except albums which Depositfiles's copyright checker eventually eliminates).

My knowledge about music from the north is near to zero and I am eager to hear what it all sounds like. So don't expect any explanations from me, as I can't give you any. Only the basic information, like the track list, serial number etc I will publish.

On the other hand, if you have any information, comment or simply want to add to confusion, you are (as usual) welcome to do it. It will be added as EDIT or under another suitable subtitle to the corresponding post.

The first album out of the package full of Carimbós which is still being transfered to my PC is by Os Brasas da Marambaia and called Carimbó Só No Pará, recorded at an unknown date.

The compositions are:

01. Homenagem a Gurupá (Os Brasas da Marambaia / Carlos Santos)
02. Só Pra Timbalá (Pedro Américo / Carlos Santos)
03. Aí Vem os Brasas (Anselmo Mesquita / Jesuino)
04. Cirene (Mário Neves / Carlos Santos)
05. Carimbó Só no Pará (Luis Avis / José / Coroxó)
06. Na Beira do Piriá (Domiciano Mesquita)
07. Adelina (Pedro Américo / Carlos Santos)

09. Mensageiro (Roberto Assunção)
10. Rosa Flor (Luiz Pinheiro)

Casanova e Sua Orquestra - Meia-noite Em Manhattan

Sinter SLP-4722

After all those false names encountered so far, of which the most nerving are the crisp sounding US names in the manner of Brad Pit or Tom Cruise, here is finally a name which is above any doubt a real name of a musician:
Casanova!
Too bad that about Casanova (the notorious playboy) there are lots of references on the net, but about Casanova e Sua Orquestra there is as good as nothing.

On this album, recorded at a date unknown to me, Casanova, the band leader,  is playing with these compositions:

01. Top Hat (Irving Berline)
02. Deep Purple (de Rose)
03. Alexander's Ragtime Band (Irving Berline)
04. La Vie En Rose (Luiguy / Piaf)
05. Tea For Two (Youmans / Caesar)
06. Stardust (H. Carmichael / M. Parish)
07. Body and Soul (Green / Hayman / Sour)
08. Continental (Conrad / Magidson)
09. St Louis Blues (W. C. Handy)
10. September Song (Weilt / Anderson)
11. Easy to Love (Cole Porter)
12. Begin the Beguine (Cole Porter)

FALSE IDENTITY? OF COURSE NOT! New link

Créditos: Pedro & 300discos

OBSERVATION by Brazilliance:

If this Casanova were Ivan Casanova, it would be Walter Wanderley, of course. But no piano, no organ. Instead, a maestro conducting jazz standards (plus a classic by Edith Piaf) thoroughly sounding like from the big band era without the jazz tinge. Great cover! Actually, this is one of at least four albums by this mysterious Casanova.

Luiz Lopes E Sua Orquestra Dancante - Baile Dourado

Disco Lar DL-LP 31.003

I am quite sure that you are asking yourselves, while looking at today's post, a simple direct question: Who is Luiz Lopes?
If you think that I know, then you are wrong. I have no idea at all. Looking up the usual suspects proved fruitless and the best I can hope is that someone who knows will testify here about his identity and the instrument he plays...

All I know is how these songs sound, but that is something you will also know if you listen to:

01. Theme Goodbye Again (Georges Auric)
02. Rosa de Maio (C. Mesquita / Evaldo Ruy)
03. Invidia (J. A. Montero)
04. Escândalo (Rubens Fuentes / R. Cardenas)
05. Dia de Pierrot (João Roberto Kelly)
06. Juizo Final (Lucio Cardim Filho)
07. Aconteceu (N. Reis / Dunga)
08. Deus, O Mundo E Você (Palmeira / Alvarez Filho)
09..Um Dia Virá (Adapt. Nazareno de Brito para Tema de Paganini)
10. Casa Vazia (João Roberto Kelly)
11. Pepito (Taylor / Truscott)
12. Legato A Un Granello di Sabbia (Nico Fidenco Marchetti)

ONE STEP FORWARD with Bossanov:

"Who is Luiz Lopes?"
I can answer, but enigma still exist!
Luiz Lopes' name is - Del Norman (at Musicolor, 1962), but who is Del Norman?

ONE MORE STEP FORWARD OR BACKWARD by Brazilliance:

According to the track lists, “Baile Dourado” by Luiz Lopes seems identical with “Mais Uma Vez Adeus” by Del Norman, issued in 1962.

The latter is featured on Toque Musical and Toque Musicall.

There is one suspicion that Del Norman (aka Luiz Lopes) is the one playing piano, organ and solovox which sounds reasonable as these are the featured instruments. There is another suspicion that Del Norman might be the nth alias of Walter Wanderley.

Well, the organ play does not really sound like WW to me, but who knows. After all, I would not take Ely Arcoverde or Ed Lincoln, into consideration but the list of possible candidates for such a kitschy (yet quite entertaining) album is endless… Aloísio Figueiredo, Celso Murilo, André Penazzi, Djalma Ferreira, Paulo Roberto, Silvio Vianna, Jorge Henrique, Renato Mendes, Lauro Paiva…

Trio Surdina - Aquarela do Brasil 10' (1955)

Musidisc DL-1004

As there is not one album presented on the net by Trio Surdina which has not landed in my collection, I assume that this one (which has not been in my collection up to now) must be a premiere on the net...

Their 10' LP recorded in 1955 consists of these 8 tracks:

1. Aquarela do Brasil (Ary Barroso)
2. Curare (Bororó)
3. Tico-Tico No Fubá (Zequinha de Abreu)
4. Guacira (Hekel Tavares / Joracy Camargo)
5. Meu Limão, Meu Limoeiro (Tradicional / Adpt. José Carlos Burle)
6. Rio (Ary Barroso)
7. Favela (Hekel Tavares / Joracy Camargo)
8. Terra Seca (Ary Barroso)

Ribamar - ...Depois do Motel

Padrão 888.122

Thanks to Zecalouro first of all, for opening my ears to the heavenly sounds of Ribamar's piano (and accordion). When I heard Ribamar for the first time I was fascinated. So were, by the way, my friends who heard his music at my place in Belgrade.
Needless to say that I started a frenetic search for more of him which resulted in two more career albums found on P2P as well as his collaborations with Waleska, Helena de Lima, Tito Madi etc...
The remaining four career albums which I could not find anywhere I noted on my Santa Claus list and although they seemed completely forgotten and lost, they were brought to light one by one thanks to dear friends Edson Mendes and Pedro.
But one album, found listed on Mercadolivre, remained a mystery up to now: ...Depois do Motel, for which I was not sure if it was by THE Ribamar (Ribamars are almost as frequent as Zezinhos) as no information, except for the front cover was displayed.
I searched the net for the title, but no result at all was obtained.

Just in case, I added it to my Santa Claus list.

Opening the package received today from Pedro & 300discos
resolved the mystery of ...Depois do Motel.

...Depois do Motel is the fourth edition of Ribamar's Duas Faces do Amor, released by Equipe (EQ 804).
Equipe released the same music as Nosso Encontro de Amor in 1969 (Equipe EQC 853).
There is also another (mono) release by Spot recorded by the fictious Quinteto Romantico called Bastante Intimo.

Why four different releases, names and covers of the same music?

I do not know, but I can only guess:
Because it is one of the best instrumental albums ever recorded in Brazil...

All other career LPs by Ribamar (except for one) and some collaborations you may find HERE.

This gem you may enjoy now by downloading these tracks (with cover scans):

01. A Noite do Meu Bem (Dolores Duran)

02. Segredo (Herivelto Martins / Marino Pinto)
      Nunca (Lupicínio Rodrigues)

03. Duas Contas (Garoto)
      Dó-ré-mi (Fernando César)

04. Alguém Como Tu (José Maria de Abreu / Jair Amorim)
Não Tem Solução (Dorival Caymmi / Carlos Guinle)

05. Cansei de Ilusões (Tito Madi)
Molambo (Jaime Florence "Meira" / Augusto Mesquita)

06. Canção de Amor (Chocolate / Elano de Paula)
Canção da Volta (Ismael Netto / Antônio Maria)

07. Não Tenho Você (Paulo Marques / Ari Monteiro)
      Se Você Se Importasse (Peterpan)

08. Folha Morta (Ary Barroso)
      Prece (Vadico / Marino Pinto)

09. Ninguém Me Ama (Fernando Lobo / Antônio Maria)
Se Eu Morresse Amanhã (Antônio Maria)

MEHR LICHT by Brazilliance:

Actually, Padrão was a subsidiary of Equipe, releasing some records in the seventies including this one in 1976. So, this reissue was published practically "in-house".

To my knowledge, Spot was subsidiary of Copacabana, which has no link to either Padrão or Equipe. According to the general sources, Ribamar was not connected to Copacabana which makes it quite strange why Spot reissued his album as Bastante Intimo by Quinteto Romantico.

Unfortunately, Equipe’s catalogue numbers don’t seem to be released chronologically, but the original album Duas Faces do Amor was presumably issued in 1963 or 1964, the Spot reissue circa 1965/66, and, as you mentioned, Equipe’s own reissue Nosso Encontro de Amor in 1969. So, Depois do Motel is the fourth issue—but is it the final one?

Another mystery which is yet unveiled: none of the four covers credit the fine musicians that accompanied Ribamar on guitar, organ, drums and the occasional vibraphone…

A Bandinha do Mozart - Viva Vovodeville (1964)

Polydor LPNG 4089

There is a third album by Mozart inside the latest Pedro & 300discos package but unfortunately, without the usual, perfectly scanned and retouched, original cover.
The label pictures were inside, which led me to the conclusion that this particular album from the immense Pedro collection was without cover. The front and back pictures included are taken from blurry photos found on Mercadolivre.

Anyway, Viva Vovodeville is apparently a real rarity.
It is, as far as I know, the soundtrack for a theater or TV show of the vaudeville kind.

The (sound)tracks are lined up as follows:

01. Alexander's Ragtime Band (Irving Berlin)
02. Vila Nova da Rainha (Porfírio Costa)
03. A Tuba do Jujuba (Alcebíades Nogueira)
04. Bigorrilho (Sebastião Gomes / Paquito / Romeu Gentil)

Codo - Vim Para Ficar (1970)

Copacabana CLP 11616

I simply can not resist the temptation to, immediately after the previous post, publish another album by Codó for one out of the two following reasons:

1. Because the music is just beautiful.

2. Because Codó has illustrated his violão with a photo of a beautiful lady.

By making this or any other decision I am splitting into two different Milans and continue my existence parallel but separated to the other Milan.
The same happens to you too when you decide on the dilemma presented or any other that comes your way...

The implications of Quantum physics do resolve lots of paradoxes, but nothing beats the experience of personally enjoying (or not enjoying) these masterfully presented tracks:

01. Irmãos Coragem (Nonato Buzar / Paulinho Tapajós)
02. Manias (Flávio Cavalcanti / Celso Cavalcanti)
03. Nada (Mercês)
04. Boa Noite Amor (José Maria de Abreu / Francisco Matoso)
05. Pedacinhos do Céu (Waldir Azevedo)
06. Canto das Flores (Codó / Heloísa Serra)
07. Pobre Elisa (Jorge Smera / Paulo Gesta)
08. Badinho (Codó)

Ritmistas RGE - Ritmos de Lina Pesce (1956)

RGE RLP 003

The first time I read about the great composer and piano player Lina Pesce was while reading Zeca's text on Loronix about her as part of presenting her accompanied by an orchestra under the direction of Maestro Lyrio Panicalli. That text and the album may be found on Órfãos do Loronix.

A dilemma Zeca voiced about the identity of the beautiful lady on the front cover (whether it were Lina or not) got a negative answer in the comments.

The other mystery, how Lina really looks like did not get an answer at that time, but it is answered now: My curiosity was satisfied after a glance upon the back cover of this 10' LP presented now, where, besides an explicit text about her and her artistic career, also her portrait is displayed.

If you are also interested to see how she looks, get this album for the photograph of her on the back cover.

If you are interested in Ritmistas RGE rendition of her compositions, get the album to find out how they sound:

1. Bem-te-vi Atrevido (Lina Pesce)
2. Sabiá Feiticeiro (Lina Pesce)
3. Corruira Saltitante (Lina Pesce)
4. Pintassilgo Apaixonado (Lina Pesce)
5. Vamos Dançar La Conga (Lina Pesce)
6. Vingança de Cupido (Lina Pesce)
7. Em Meu Rancho Panteiro (Lina Pesce)
8. História de Uma Lágrima (Lina Pesce)

All under the musical direction of Henrique Simonetti and the artistic direction of Roberto Corte Real.

Dilermando Pinheiro - Sambas do Passado Vol.2 (1956)

Musidisc M-044

The previous post, in which a parallel realities premiere of the outstanding sambista Dilermando Pinheiro was made, was without any accompanying text because the last few days I am short of time and concentration. Also now I will just say that this 10' LP from 1956 features eight samba tracks sung by Dilermando in a melodic, pleasant, unpretentious and cool manner.

In short: Great!

The sambas are:

1. Vai Cavar a Nota (Gadé / Valfrido Silva)
2. Mágoas De Um Vagabundo (Osvaldo Silva / Valfrido Silva)
3. Velhos Tempos (J. Cascata / Leonel Azevedo)
4. Faceira (Ary Barroso)
5. Vai Haver Barulho No Chatô (Noel Rosa / Valfrido Silva)
6. Até Amanhã (Noel Rosa)
7. Retratinho (J. Cascata / Leonel Azevedo)
8. Nega Risoleta (Raul Marques / Moacir Bernardino)

Carlos Penha e Nonato Silva - Compacto Duplo (1964)

Philips 440.635-PT

A vocal duo consisting of Carlos Penha and Nonato Silva, two artists previously completely unknown to me. Not much information I could find, but, perhaps, somebody who knows will tell us what he knows.

Information won't change your opinion about these tracks, so don't wait for knowledge. Enjoy the four tracks now, ask questions later:

01. Balanço do Mar (Zil Rozendo)
02. Sambambá (Zil Rozendo / Francisco Carioca)
03. Bossa do Gereréco (Augusto Messias / Daltro / Zarani)
04. Tim-Dom-Dom (Codó / João Mello)

SAMBAMBÁ

EDIT by Brazilliance:
According to the Philips catalogue nummber this CPD was probably issued in 1964.
A solid rendition of "Tim Dom Dom"!

REVIEW by Bossanov:
I have no English words enough to explain all the charme of this record...
What a nice, swinging, elegant bossas!!
Surely, one of greatly underrated gem of bossa nova era in Brazil!!!
Slightly remind me Reginaldo Bessa at his best, but, of course, completly original stuff!!!

QUESTION by Bossanov:
Can it be the same Carlos Penha on "BOM BALANÇO EM BOSSA NOVA" (1973) Beverly?

Celso Murilo Orgao e Ritmo - Ritmos Na Passarela (1961)

Pawal P-20.003

Lots of people have been complaining lately that this parallel reality is too clear, straight and sober and that it is impossible to encounter any confusion or similar...

Well, I am determined to keep it that way!

Here is another example of clarity:

To read Zeca's text about this album, which is a Pedro transfer, but was posted as a Loronix transfer on Loronix four years ago, you may turn your attention to Órfãos do Loronix where the text will be re-printed, but not before Sunday, August 02, 2009.

You do not have to wait until August 02. 2009 to enjoy Celso's performing of the compositions listed below. On the contrary, you are invited to enjoy them starting from now on, until one gray morning you notice that the link turned into the horrifying DOWNLOAD YESTERDAY advice:

Celso Murilo - Ferias No Drink (1962)

Pawal P-20.014

After posting Celso Murilo's debut album and asking a naive question about Angela or not Angela on the front cover, I got no answer to that dilemma.
On the other hand, I received today a package from Pedro & 300discos containing some missing recordings by the great organ player.

Among other, his Férias No Drink from 1960 with:

01. Pergunte ao João (Helena Silvia / Milton Costa)
02. Cadê o Pandeiro (Roberto Martins / Valfrido Silva)
03. Se Quiser Pode Ir (José Batista / João da Silva / Arthur Montenegro)

Tete Espindola - Passaros Na Garganta (1982)

Som da Gente SDG 012/82

Now something out of the usual for Parallel Realities and also out of the usual music in general.
Tetê Espíndola's conceptual album from 1982 is something I have never heard anything to which it could be compared to. The nearest to her concept would, maybe, be Elizabeth Fraser's singing on Victorialand, recorded four years later.
Anyway, as this album was already posted on several sites, to some of you it will not be unknown.
The others who have it for the first time in front of them, have the opportunity to be (pleasantly or unpleasantly) surprised with:

01. Amor e Guavira (Tetê Espíndola / Carlos Rennó)
02. Cunhataiporã (Geraldo Espíndola)
03. Canção dos Vagalumes (Arrigo Barnabé)
04. Olhos de Jacaré (Geraldo Espíndola / Carlos Rennó)
05. Fio de Cabelo (Tetê Espíndola)
06. Cuiabá (Tetê Espíndola / Carlos Rennó)
07. Pássaros na Garganta (Tetê Espíndola / Carlos Rennó)
08. Sertaneja (René Bittencourt)
09. Longos Prazeres de Amor (Celito Espíndola)
10. Paisagem Fluvial (Tetê Espíndola / Arrigo Barnabé)
11. Ibiporã (Arrigo Barnabé)
12. Jaguadarte - Galadriel (Arrigo Barnabé / Tetê Espíndola)

Simon Boutman's Brazil Groove (2013)

Simon Boutman's mighty Unbreakable Microgrooves blog, a place well known to most of us, where pleasant surprises happened with Simon's each new post, presenting assorted gems of rarities from Brazil to all interested, disappeared overnight one night.

After some time Microgrooves started anew but then another night disappeared overnight once more.

A few days ago the third reincarnation happened and we find the Microgrooves reborn as Brazil Groove.
